Patrick Dorgu Shines at Left-Back as Manchester United Cruise to 4-0 Champions League Win
Manchester — Patrick Dorgu delivered an impressive performance in an unfamiliar left-back role as Manchester United marked their return to the Champions League with a commanding 4-0 victory over Azerbaijan’s Sabah Baku.
While Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes were among the goalscorers, it was the 21-year-old Danish international who earned UEFA’s Player of the Match award. Dorgu provided an assist and impressed at both ends of the pitch in his first appearance at left-back under Michael Carrick.
Dorgu has rarely operated as a conventional full-back since joining United. He was primarily used as a wing-back under Ruben Amorim before Carrick pushed him further forward as a left winger. However, with Luke Shaw unavailable through injury, Carrick moved Dorgu into the back four.
The decision paid off in the 27th minute when Dorgu burst forward down the left and delivered a low cross for Cunha to finish. The move highlighted the Dane’s pace, physical power and willingness to make aggressive overlapping runs.
Dorgu remained adventurous throughout the match despite starting in defence. UEFA’s technical observers praised his effectiveness when joining counter-attacks and his combinations with Cunha, giving United another way of quickly turning defence into attack.
His defensive contribution was also significant. Dorgu won eight duels, the most of any United player, using his strength and athleticism effectively while continuing to provide attacking width.
There were, however, signs that he remains a work in progress at left-back. His attacking instincts occasionally left space behind him when he pushed forward, forcing United’s central defenders to provide cover. Against stronger opposition, those defensive positioning issues could become more costly.
Carrick acknowledged after the match that United have made significant progress offensively but still need to improve defensively. That concern will become particularly relevant this weekend when Manchester City visit Old Trafford.
With Shaw’s availability for the derby still uncertain, Dorgu could again be asked to start at left-back. After excelling against Sabah Baku, a meeting with City would provide a far more demanding examination of whether the Danish international can become a genuine long-term solution on United’s left side.
