Elversberg Stun Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 in Historic Bundesliga Debut
Elversberg — Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg produced a remarkable upset in their first-ever top-flight match, defeating former champions Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 despite a huge financial and squad-value gap between the two clubs.
The hosts made a sensational start, taking the lead after just eight minutes when Petkov finished from close range. Only a minute later, Cole Campbell capitalised on a Leverkusen passing error, drove into the penalty area and calmly converted to make it 2-0.
Elversberg struck again immediately after half-time. Just 25 seconds after the restart, Mokwa found the net to extend the advantage to 3-0 and leave Leverkusen facing a stunning defeat.
Leverkusen dominated possession with more than 60 percent of the ball and also recorded more attempts than the hosts, but costly mistakes in their defensive build-up proved decisive. Patrik Schick finally pulled one back in the 77th minute before Kofane scored again in stoppage time, but the comeback came too late.
The match also provided a personal milestone for 20-year-old American forward Campbell, who scored his first Bundesliga goal. He had previously made 12 appearances in the competition for Hoffenheim and Borussia Dortmund without scoring, but repeatedly threatened Leverkusen’s defence from the left and emerged as one of Elversberg’s standout performers.
The scale of the upset was underlined by the financial disparity. Elversberg’s starting lineup was valued at approximately €33.5 million compared with Leverkusen’s €238 million squad value — a difference of more than seven times.
Elversberg’s entire annual budget is reportedly around €31.2 million. The club represents a town of only about 13,000 people and plays at a stadium with a capacity of roughly 10,000, making its rise to Germany’s top flight particularly remarkable.
Only four years ago, during the 2021-22 season, Elversberg were still competing in Germany’s fourth tier. Their rapid rise eventually took them to a second-place finish in the 2. Bundesliga and promotion to the country’s highest level.
Club captain Pinckert described the victory as difficult to put into words. For a small-town club making its Bundesliga debut against a recent champion, the 3-2 win provided a historic opening chapter to Elversberg’s first season among Germany’s elite.
